Rafael Nadal admits he is concerned over the coronavirus outbreak

Rafael Nadal will play the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games in singles and doubles. The former number 1 in the world will also play double in Indian Wells paired with his compatriot Marc Lopez. The Spanish tennis player, who has already won the gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, hopes to arrive in the best possible form and to compete for the final victory.

The Coronavirus epidemic has put many countries in difficulty, including Japan, where the Olympic Games will take place this summer.

“I hope it is controlled, that a remedy is found and this uncertainty is stopped, this psychosis, this fear,” Nadal told reporters at the Mexican Open. “It is the most important thing, not only for the Olympic Games, but for humanity. The Olympic Games is one of the most special events in the world. It is a unique experience to be there and I consider it the most difficult tournament to win because you only have two or three chances in your career.”

“Our basic thoughts are that we will go ahead with the Olympic and Paralympic Games as scheduled,” Committee chief executive Toshiro Muto told the press. “For the time being, the situation of the coronavirus infection is, admittedly, difficult to predict, but we will take measures such that we’ll have a safe Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Nadal began his 2020 season by playing at the inaugural 2020 ATP Cup and helped Spain reach the final where they lost to Serbia, with Nadal losing to Djokovic in straight sets. Nadal then played at the 2020 Australian Open and won his first three matches in straight sets against Hugo Dellien, Federico Delbonis and Pablo Carreño Busta. In the fourth round, he defeated Nick Kyrgios in four sets and reached the quarterfinals where he lost to Dominic Thiem in four sets.
