Serena Williams: "I just want to prepare my daughter"

With a prize money of over $90 million, Serena Williams is the female tennis player who has made the most money throughout the history of the sport. The 23-time Grand Slam champion is involved in numerous projects even off the court, which have influenced her performances in recent years.

Williams recently partnered up with Secret, an antiperspirant deodorant. “I’m really proud to partner with Secret for because I want to continue this work together and we’re going to commission a study to understand gender equality in the sport. It will inform us about future actions that we can take and we’re actually going to commit to a million dollars to combat inequality" - said the former World number 1 to HuffPost.

On her daughter's future, she added: “I’m thinking inequality, gender. Because she is going to be a Black woman, even though she is of mixed race, it’s going to be harder for her. But those are things that I hope won’t be as hard. I mean, it wasn’t as hard for me as it was for my mom, and hopefully then maybe for my daughter, it will be a little less or a lot less. There’ll be some challenges, but I just want to prepare her for that.”

Top seeded Williams won her first singles title as a mother at the 2020 ASB Classic beating Giorgi, McHale, Siegemund, Anisimova along the way and Jessica Pegula in the final. She also reached the finals in the doubles tournament with Caroline Wozniacki. Hence, she became the first woman in the professional era with at least one title in four decades: the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s.
