Simona Halep trains tirelessly: “I reached autopilot mode”

Simona Halep likes to take as much value as possible from her never-ending practice sessions because she knows the old saying ‘practice makes it perfect’, this mentality keeping her at the top of the WTA rankings since 2014.

The Romanian champion pointed out the fluctuance of form that inevitably happens, especially among the top echelon of players. “People don’t understand that you can’t feel the tennis racket, the movement of the ball when it’s coming to you, or your legs the same way, every day, at the highest level. “ Halep said in her newest feature video made by Banca Transilvania.

However, lack of practice is the main cause that triggers the ups and downs in a player’s form, as Halep exemplifies. “I took a break for two-three weeks and then, on the first day of practice, I didn’t hit any cone. It’s a thing you have to practice. And now I hit two-three-four in one practice.” said Halep.

And as practice is sacred for Simona, no wonder that her place in the top 10 is unshakeable. “Over the last years, it seems I reached autopilot mode. What you do at practice, you have to do during matches, too. It’s not good to think you have to treat them differently.” said Simona Halep.

“You get better and better. And I adore that… when I see I hit the ball wrong, I just want to do 100-200 more hits or even more, until I feel the ball is in my hand, without the racket, like it’s making the connection between me and the ball. Until I feel the ball is part of me. You empty your mind through exercise. That’s why we practice with a lot of repetitions. So I can be able to say “I’ll close my eyes and I’ll hit that spot.” Simona concluded.
