Bianca Andreescu: 'I'm hoping to play in Miami, getting better day by day'
World no. 6 and the US Open champion Bianca Andreescu is yet to play a match in 2020, struggling with a knee injury suffered at the WTA Finals. Making her debut in Shenzhen, Bianca injured her knee in the second match against Karolina Pliskova, withdrawing from the last encounter and staying sidelined ever since, having to skip the ASB Classic in Auckland, the Australian Open, Dubai, Doha and Indian Wells. Andreescu traveled with the rest of the Canadian Fed Cup squad to Switzerland, training with her teammates but deciding not to play and take more time to get back at 100%. The Canadian was also in Indian Wells this week but she had to skip the title defense in the desert (before the entire event was canceled due to a coronavirus), hoping to get ready for Miami if that tournament goes on in two weeks.
"I'm just taking it day by day, doing better and better all the time. I'm very pleased about that. I've been doing many rehabs and strengthening on my knee. Right now, I'm hoping to play Miami Open," Andreescu said. "I'm super impatient to start competing again; I want to do the most and I'm super anxious. I've been working hard and I feel ready to play. I think I can reach an even higher level in comparison to where I stood last year. Recovering from an injury is never easy; it's one of the toughest things an athlete has to go through in their career. I've been through it quite a lot so far. I know what I'm dealing with and I try my best to look at ways I can look towards the future, trying to stay as positive as I can. Some days I don't even want to get out of bed but with the end goal in mind, it gets me motivation and inspiration to keep on pushing. I changed my nutrition a bit more; I'm way more aware of what I'm putting in my mouth."
