Diego Schwartzman: "The situation is completely understandable"

The Indian Wells tennis tournament scheduled for Monday in California was canceled due to the new coronavirus epidemic, organizers announced Sunday evening. The decision was made after "Riverside County's public health department declared a public health emergency for Coachella Valley after a locally confirmed case of Covid-19 coronavirus," tournament management said in a statement.

Earlier, the organizers of Indian Wells had announced a reimbursement to anyone who wished to skip the event.

Argentine Diego Schwartzman took to social media to express his view on the matter. “It would be nice if ATP Tour communicates a bit better to the players about a suspension of such a tournament when we are all here. Finding out bout it on social networks or WhatsApp is quite loose. The situation is completely understandable. The way to report it leaves much to be desired. There should be more information for upcoming tournaments that are also in affected cities and countries” - Schwartzman said.

Diego has won three ATP singles titles, and reached his career-high singles ranking of world No. 11 in June 2018. Although known as a clay court specialist, he actually prefers hard courts; additionally, he is noted for his high-quality return game.

In 2019, as he had done in 2017, he led all ATP players in percentage of second serve return points won (56.05%). Career-wise, Schwartzman was fourth among active players in return games won (31.1%), behind only Nadal (33.5%), Djokovic (32%), and Andy Murray (31.7%).
