Dusan Lajovic: City cancelled Indian Wells Masters, not tournament
Serbian tennis star Dusan Lajovic says the city made a decision to cancel the Indian Wells Masters due to the coronavirus outbreak and not the tournament.
On Sunday, the Indian Wells Masters became the first major United States sporting event to get called off over the coronavirus concerns as the extreme decision came as a shock to the players.
"It was odd because they cancelled the event without some type of prior announcement or consultation with the tournament and players -- the city cancelled it, not the tournament. They had a few (coronavirus) cases in the area and the city called off the whole event. I heard the news a bit earlier from some people but it all happened in one hour," Lajovic told Sport Klub.
Speaking of his upcoming plans, Lajovic revealed: "I will stay here for a day or two to see will Miami make some decision. If it gets cancelled, I will return home and then wait to see what's next."
Meanwhile, the Miami Masters organizers released a statement, confirming that they plan to proceed with the event, which is due to start on March 23 -- but underlined that they are closely monitoring the coronavirus situation.
