Lyon Open: Second seed Kristina Mladenovic moves into second round

There were no upsets on the second day of main draw play in Lyon on Tuesday. The highest seed who took to the court, second seed Kristina Mladenovic had to come from a set down but advanced to the second round with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over fellow Frenchwoman Chloe Paquet in two hours and 12 minutes. Mladenovic will play Anna-Lena Friedsam in the second round.

Sixth seed Jil Teichmann won against French wildcard Clara Burel 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 47 minutes. Teichmann awaits the winner between Mandy Minella and Oceane Dodin in the next round. Seventh seed Daria Kasatkina defeated Pauline Parmentier 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 in two hours and 26 minutes. Kasatkina will play Romanian Irina Bara, who qualified into the main draw, in the round-of-16.

Viktoria Kuzmova, seeded eighth, also needed three sets to win against Dutch lucky loser Lesley Kerkhove Pattinama in their opener. Kuzmova won 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 in an hour and 38 minutes. She will play Tereza Martincova in the second round. Martincova came through her opener against Ana Bogdan 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, four minutes short of the two-hour mark.

In the other results, Camila Giorgi beat Vera Lapko in their first-round match. Needing an hour and 22 minutes, Giorgi won in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. In the second round, the Italian will play France’s fourth seed, Alize Cornet.

Lastly, Viktoriya Tomova beat France’s qualifier Magdalena Frech 7-5, 6-7(5), 6-4 in two hours and 48 minutes to reach the second round. Tomova will play Belgium’s Alison Van Uytvanck in the second round.
