Roger Federer made UK Speaker Bercow lose his temper each time he had lost a match

John Bercow, Speaker in the House of Commons between 2009 and 2019, would have a hard time coping with Roger Federer, his favorite tennis player, losing a match. A new book called “John Bercow: Call to Order” revealed many controversial moments that exposed a harsher face of the politician.

Sebastian Whale, the author of the biography, included claims from some of Bercow’s former staff, pointing out many bullying episodes from his time spent as Speaker. One such episode took place during a trip he had with Kate Emms, his private secretary. John Bercow blamed Kate after his toothpaste was confiscated by airport security staff. As a payback, John decided to not say a single word to his companion during the nine hours long flight that followed the incident.

Other allegations — from a former Commons staff — claimed that Bercow would “throw a paddy” if Roger Federer lost a match. As the 38 years old Swiss player is John’s favorite tennis player, the politician could be seen in a bad mood whenever Federer had a rough day on the court. "You'd know what you would be walking into that morning... he would throw a paddy - stamping, slamming doors, screaming" it’s written in the book.

John Bercow is known as a big fan of the tennis world. He even wrote a book called “Tennis Maestros” in 2014. In his book, “Bercow describes the accomplishments of twenty all-time tennis heroes and suggests a hall of fame from the unashamed vantage point of the lifelong enthusiast.”
