Roger Federer's Laver Cup hits on Roland Garros questionable schedule
The fourth edition of the Laver Cup will gather some of the world's finest players in Boston between September 25-27, with Team Europe seeking the fourth title under the guidance of the founder and the first confirmed player so far, Roger Federer. Back in September in Geneva, Team Europe prevailed against Team World in the deciding match to keep the beautiful trophy in their cabinet for the third straight year and make a proper celebration out of it. After the opening two encounters of the final day, Team World had the edge over their rivals and it was Federer who had to defeat John Isner to keep Team Europe alive, prevailing in two close sets to reduce the deficit and set all eyes on the last encounter between Alexander Zverev and Milos Raonic.
Of course, it had to go down to the wire and the German prevailed in the match tie break to be the one who secured the title for Team Europe for the second time in a row, wrapping up an incredible event that highlighted tennis news during that weekend. As it turned out on Tuesday, Roland Garros will go on between September 20 - October 4, changing the schedule due to a coronavirus without consulting the other organizations from the tennis world. Thus, it will overlap with the already sold out Laver Cup, which means that Roger Federer will undoubtedly skip the clay Major. However, it will be tough for him to find the remaining players that will represent Team World and Team Europe, as the players from the top will hardly decide to skip the Major in such a turbulent and unpredictable season and compete in Boston instead.
"The tennis world learned today that the French Tennis Federation intends to schedule Roland Garros from September 20 - October 4, 2020, due to the impact of COVID-19. That schedule overlaps with the dates of the already sold out Laver Cup 2020 scheduled for September 25 – 27, 2020, at TD Garden in Boston. This announcement came as a surprise to us and our partners - Tennis Australia, the USTA and the ATP. It raises many questions and we are assessing the situation. At this time, we want our fans, sponsors, broadcasters, staff, volunteers, players and the great city of Boston to know that we intend to hold Laver Cup 2020 as currently scheduled."
