Coach Nicolas Massu: Goal is to bring Dominic Thiem to world No. 1
Coach Nicolas Massu says he and Dominic Thiem have set the highest possible standard as the goal is to help the Austrian become the world No. 1 tennis player.
Thiem, 26, added Massu to his coaching staff in February 2019 and their collaboration has been nothing but a success so far.
As Thiem's relationship with coach Gunter Bresnik was declining -- the Austrian brought Massu and shortly after split with his long-time coach Bresnik.
Thiem made it to the No. 4 place on the ATP list in 2017 but struggled to make it past the Big Three and achieve a new career-high ranking.
With the arrival of Massu, that changed as the Austrian achieved a new career-high ranking of No. 3 in the world this past March.
"The goal is to improve of course, but I would say that is the goal of all coaches. With Dominic, we clearly set ourselves the goal of reaching the No. 1 place in the world. I know that Dominic will do everything to try to get there," Massu said on Instagram Live, as revealed on We Love Tennis France. "He is a serious player, well educated, and whose behavior is much appreciated by the fans. So I want to help him fulfill his dreams. I know that this path will be long and that for my part I should always have in mind the goal of progressing as a coach."
Thiem won his maiden Masters title last year after beating Roger Federer in the Indian Wells final.
The Austrian also ended runner-up at the French Open last year and this year's Australian Open, respectively.
