Dominic Thiem hits back at former coach Gunter Bresnik

Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem has hit back at Gunter Bresnik after his former coach called out him and his father Wolfgang, claiming the Thiem family wasn't fair to him.

The relationship between 16-time ATP champion Thiem and coach Bresnik appeared to be damaged at the beginning of last year as reportedly Bresnik was getting tired of traveling the circuit.

In April 2019 -- two months after adding 2004 Athens Olympics champion Nicolas Massu to his coaching staff -- the Austrian confirmed that he and Bresnik had split after 15 years of working together.

"Every day I realize more and more how unfair they were with me. I still don’t understand anything,” Bresnik told APA, as revealed on Essentially Sports.

"Honesty, loyalty, values…there wasn’t much adhered to. If I owe everything to someone, then I can’t deal with him that way. Wolfgang (Thiem) would be a club trainer in Seebenstein and Dominic would be a future player."

It didn't take long for back-to-back French Open runner-up Thiem to respond as the world No. 3 was disappointed after hearing the comments made by his former coach.

"It's deporable, that he always blames my family and me in public for whatever reason after we worked succesfully for so many years," Thiem told APA, as revealed by Jannik Schneider.

"When he complains about a lack of respect, and says that I owe it all to him, and seriously suggests that I would have been a Futures player without him, I have to ask whether he has developed delusions of grandeur. And if he -- the other way around -- he completely lacks respect for my father and me."

The Austrian tennis star also underlined that Bresnik knows very well why the collaboration was ended: "I didn't part ways with him without a reason. Bresnik knows about the reasons and at this time I won't make them public."
