Duckworth: I’m used to extended breaks but tough thing for most of us is the unknown

Australia's James Duckworth, ranked No. 83 in the world, says he is using the current tennis shutdown to work on his injured shoulder.

The 28 year old Duckworth was playing some of the best tennis of his career before the tennis circuit was suspended due to the global pandemic. Since the US Open, he has won 3 ATP Challenger titles, reached another final on the ATP Challenger circuit and also reached the semi-finals of the ATP Tata Open in Pune, India.

Speaking to Australian doubles legend Todd Woodbridge, Duckworth commented, "I’ve been having some shoulder issues for about nine months. When the season was suspended, we thought it would be a good chance to try a little arthroscopy and see if we can improve something. Now we’ve got that time, hopefully it will help."

The Australian says this is not the first time that he is undergoing an extended break - having undergone multiple surgeries in 2017-2018. “I’m used to the extended breaks, but the tough thing for most of us is the unknown. We just don’t know when the tour will resume. It is tough to prepare for that and train accordingly. I’m trying to stay as occupied as I can, not easy at times, but you’ve got to do it. Staying home and staying isolated is helping the medical services to flatten that curve and that is the best way to say lives. You’ve just got to try and stay positive.”
