Dusan Lajovic: Staging events behind closed doors is not the solution

Serbian tennis star Dusan Lajovic thinks the Wimbledon organizers made the right choice when they decided to cancel the event. 

On Wednesday, Wimbledon got cancelled for the first time since 1945 as the coronavirus pandemic doesn't seem to be nowhere near the end. 

The tennis season has now been suspended until at least July 13. 

"Wimbledon is specific for being played on grass and that date is the only one in which you can stage the event. Unlike Roland Garros, they can't move the event to a later date. I think it was the right choice because they would probably need two or two and a half months to get ready for the tournament," Lajovic told Sport Klub. 

There have been talks about some events moving to a later date and potentially staging them without fans. 

"On the other side, the talks about staging some events behind the closed doors -- that's also too risky," Lajovic said. "When you look at the number of players and the number of their teams at the Grand Slams, alongside with the qualifiers, you have around 512 men and women. Plus, account that every player has two or three team members... Then add the ball boys and girls, umpires, line umpires -- we get to a number of three or four thousand people at the event without fans. That's a big number of people. I think staging events behind the closed doors isn't the solution."

Lajovic enjoyed a great start to the year as he was a member of the Serbian team that won the inaugural ATP Cup. 

The Serb is now enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 23 in the world.
