Gabriela Sabatini: After 30 years I win a title again and without leaving home
Former World No. 3 Gabriela Sabatini has won the virtual US Open women's event which was voted upon by fans online via Twitter during these days.
In the final of the virtual event, Sabatini defeated Russian Maria Sharapova. The Argentine had won the actual US Open in 1990 - beating arch-rival Steffi Graf in three sets for what was to be her only Grand Slam singles title.
The US Open held a "Bracket of Champions" over the past week, which included the participation of various winners of the open era, in a direct elimination format. All winners from 1968 till 2019 had been included in the bracket.
To win the virtual title, Sabatini defeated Serena Williams' 1999 title, then Chris Evert (the 1975 champion), then Belgian Kim Clijsters (champion in 2009), and Evert once again (1978) before beating Sharapova (2006 champion) in the final.
The voting was very close with Sabatini getting 51% of the voted and Sharapova getting 49%.
