Jamie Murray: Top players earn lot of money and they will be fine

Former doubles world No. 1 Jamie Murray says the top players will be just fine during the Tour suspension.

But the British star fears that lower level professionals could face financial struggles since there won't be any events taking place in the next three months.

On Wednesday, the ATP and WTA further extended the suspension of tours until at least July 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Murray, a three-time Wimbledon mixed doubles champion, has earned $4,852,383 in prize money so far in his career.

"The top players, they make a lot of money, they'll be fine," Murray told Newshub after Wimbledon got cancelled.

"But obviously players further down the rankings, they won't be earning, which is not ideal obviously."

Last week, the AELTC announced they would hold a meeting this week to determine the faith of Wimbledon.

It became clear that The Championships would likely get cancelled -- not even postponed.

On Wednesday, the worst fears became a reality when Wimbledon got cancelled for the first time since 1945.

"It is with great regret that the Main Board of the All England Club (AELTC) and the Committee of Management of The Championships have today decided that The Championships 2020 will be cancelled due to public health concerns linked to the coronavirus epidemic. The 134th Championships will instead be staged from 28 June to 11 July 2021," the Wimbledon organizers said in a released statement.

"Uppermost in our mind has been the health and safety of all of those who come together to make Wimbledon happen – the public in the UK and visitors from around the world, our players, guests, members, staff, volunteers, partners, contractors, and local residents – as well as our broader responsibility to society’s efforts to tackle this global challenge to our way of life."
