Marc Rosset Responds to Roger Federer's Suggestion of Merging the ATP eWTA Tours
Former ATP Swiss tennis player Marc Rosset has added his comments to the list of voices who have spoken about after Roger Federer tweeted about merging the ATP & WTA Tours.
Speaking to RTS, Rosset says he is not sure if players who may not be there in 4 years time should be the ones leading the way.
Rosset commented, "It seems complicated to me to make the decisions by listening to players who, perhaps, will not be there in 4 years. If we take the example of F1, Monaco may well be a legendary Grand Prix, they still had to comply with FIA requirements to stay on the circuit. So yes, you have to work with the four Grand Slam tournaments, but if the ATP takes the lead and imposes things on these 4 majors, things that they don't accept, will Federer or Nadal boycott these events and deprive themselves of a possibility of winning one more? I don't think so.."
Federer's suggestion to merge the two tennis bodies has received support from several quarters - including Rafael Nadal, Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova, Garbine Muguruza Billie Jean King and Vasek Pospisil. As of now. Australia's Nick Kyrgios is the only player who has voice his disapproval of the idea.
The ATP & WTA chiefs as well as Tennis Australia have also said they welcome the suggestion.
Rosset is best known for winning the men's singles gold medal at the 1992 Olympic Games. He also won the Grand Slam doubles title at the French Open in 1992 partnering compatriot Jakob Hlasek.
