Stefan Koubek: Players will be more interested in Davis Cup Finals this year

Austrian Davis Cup Team Captain Stefan Koubek thinks there will be a bigger interest in the Davis Cup Finals this year.

The inaugural Davis Cup Finals were staged last year in Madrid from November 18-24.

Players weren't especially thrilled with the date of the Davis Cup Finals and some big names decided to skip the event.

But this year the date shouldn't be a problem as the plan is to extend the season into December if it resumes.

The ATP has suspended the Tour until at least July 13 due to the coronavirus outbreak and most players will suffer a financial hit.

Koubek thinks the fact that there is a lot money involved in the Davis Cup Finals will help the event in their bid of having a strong list of names competing in Madrid.

"The chances are that many will want to be there. There are no points, but there will be a lot of money," Koubek told Austrian TV, as revealed on We Love Tennis France. "But we must be careful: first, we must see how will the health situation in Spain, of course, develop. Second, if the planned amount of money can actually be distributed because there will be cuts everywhere."

Austria is one of the five nations that is projected to make a debut at the Davis Cup Finals from November 23-29.

Last month, Austria defeated Uruguay in a Davis Cup qualifying round tie to book a place for this year's Davis Cup Finals.
