Tennis Legend Guillermo Vilas Reported to Be Suffering from Alzheimer's Disease
Tennis legend and four time Grand Slam champion Guillermo Vilas has been battling an illness related to cognitive decline, according to reports in the Argentine media.
Vilas is currently surrounded by his family at his residence in Monaco and has not made any public appearances in a while.
According to journalist Sergio Stuart, the 67 year old has been suffering from the decline for the past few years now.
While many have been silent on his condition, the former captain of the Davis Cup national team, Tito Vázquez, did mentioned in an interview in March 2018 that “No one says it but I think he has an Alzheimer’s disease. And, according to what I understand from people who have spoken to me, they have seen him quite badly,”.
In the past few years, there have been some signs of decline in VIlas during television and public appearances.
He has not made any public appearances for a while now and in October last year, a video of him with former rival Bjorn Borg was seen on the networks in which there was no sound, they were both laughing in an clip that lasted seven seconds and was filmed in a café in Monaco.
He won the Australian Open in 1978 and 1979, the French Open in 1977 and the US Open in 1977. Besides, his four Grand Slam singles titles, he also won one year-end Masters, nine Grand Prix Super Series titles and 62 total ATP titles. In the ATP computer rankings, he peaked at No. 2 in April 1975, a position that he held for a total of 83 weeks. He was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1991, two years after his first retirement. He was ranked No. 1 by several publications in the pre-computer rankings era.
Vilas became the second man to win more than 900 matches in the Open Era.
