Roger Federer's best memory - 2010 edition: Australian Open, a new kingdom
Roger Federer's career is studded with great successes and incredible records: with 20 Slams he is the record holder but the Swiss Maestro has achieved other great goals, such as eight triumphs at Wimbledon, the weeks as world no. 1, and the titles on the grass and hard courts. For each season, however, there is a particular goal, an achievement that should be highlighted.
At the beginning of 2010, Roger continued the positive trend that had already been seen since the Roland Garros of the previous year. The best result of the season happened at the Australian Open, where he won his 16th Slam. The previous season he ended Melbourne in tears after the final lost against Rafael Nadal, while in 2010 he raised his fourth Australian Open trophy.
Starting the top-seed Federer faced Andreev, Hănescu and Montañés in the first three rounds, losing only one set against Andreev. In the fourth round, he faced and defeated Lleyton Hewitt in three sets. In the quarter-finals, he eliminated Nikolaj Davydenko in four sets, while in the semi-finals he won against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in three sets.
In the bottom half, the young Andy Murray overtook Kevin Anderson, Gicquel, Serra and John Isner in the first four rounds. In the quarterfinals, he won against the defending champion Rafael Nadal (who retired in the third set), and against Marin Cilic in the semifinal. Federer defeated the Briton in three sets, with the final score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(11), entering even more into the legend.
"I knew that here last year, even though I had lost in the final against Rafa, I had played one of my best games, considering my back problems. But, after I won Paris and Wimbledon, and I broke Sampras' Slam record, I got rid of all the uncomfortable questions. And now I play completely relaxed: I got what I didn't think was possible, until the end of my career I will try to enjoy the Tour."
