Tommy Robredo reveals he broke down in tears after achieving a sensational comeback
Tommy Robredo, a former World No. 5, shared some interesting anecdotes on Behind the Racquet, the website managed by Noah Rubin, who was recently included in L’Equipe’s Top 20 people who matter the most in worldwide tennis.
After talking about his difficult beginnings and about modern tennis, Robredo shared two of his favorites tennis moments: “One of my favorite moments from tennis was in the [2006] Paris Masters and I was seventh in the world. I was trying to get into the year end tournament [ATP Finals], and the eighth and ninth player in the world were right behind me. Both players played before me and won their first round matches. I was down a set and 5-2 double break [against Sebastien Grosjean], and if I lost that match I would’ve lost my chance. I somehow managed to come back and win [3-6 7-5 6-4] and broke down crying in the locker room from almost achieving something I worked so hard for. Both players had tough matches next round that they lost, which gave me that spot I was playing for.” The Spaniard went on to reach the semifinals of the Paris Masters, losing only to Nikolay Davydenko.
The actual World No. 214 also opened up on his 2013 R32 match against Gael Monfils in Roland Garros: “It was a year and half after my leg injury. I didn’t know if I would ever play again, if my body had the ability to play at the top level again. I came back from two sets down for the third time in a row that tournament. This one was special. When I won the final point, all 10,000 people were standing and my skin was shaking. To feel all those people clapping, cheering and enjoying the effort I put in. These are the moments I play for, the one I will remember forever.”
