Former tennis agent explains what it really means to be professional tennis player
Former tennis agent Alexis Tetang has suggested that not everyone can call himself a real professional as you need to have results and to be able to make a living out of it.
The tennis season has been suspended since mid-March and most of the players are experiencing financial struggles and difficulties -- proving that life for the most players on the Tour is far from great.
World No. 1 Novak Djokovic is leading the initiative to help the lower-ranked players by supporting the player relief fund and he hopes the major governing bodies of tennis will join the cause.
"People often imagine they are going to be professional players. It's easy to say that word — 'professional.' But pro means what it means — you make a living playing tennis," Tetang told L'Equipe.
"Don't call yourself a pro when you are not one. It's a competitive field. Competition means merit. If we start to encourage people to be part of a system when they have no results, it'll do no good. It's like claiming to be a lawyer when you have no clients."
