Novak Djokovic: 'Much will depend on how the situation in the United States will be'

The 2020 tennis schedule has been completely revolutionized by the health emergency that has hit the world. A forced stop from the beginning of March, which led to the cancellation of Wimbledon, the Indian Wells and Miami Masters 1000, and the cancellation or postponement of many other tournaments such as the Roland Garros, Rome and the Masters 1000 of Madrid.

A slip that could lead to a fiery October. The organizers of Roland Garros were the first to move, even anticipating those of the ATP and positioning the French Slam at the end of September. A decision that sparked numerous controversies, given that the tournament was inserted just after the US Open, in a situation that would certainly affect the players, engaged in two consecutive Slams on different surfaces and from one continent to another.

Given the present scenario there, it would be unsafe to host tournaments. Instead, the European clay-court swing can replace the American hard court swing. “Officially it is July 13,” World number 1 Novak Djokovic told Sky Sports Italia. “But they have already canceled the WTA tournament in Canada, but not the men’s one. We have to see how the situation in the United States will be because we should go there in August.”

“If it becomes less risky, we will be able to resume. There is also the option that they will cancel all the tournaments in America. And then start with clay in the autumn, maybe come to Rome in 2-3 months. Hopefully, we can start playing again,” the 17-time Grand Slam continued.
