Rafael Nadal: 'I’m not sure if I can go to the academy'
The Coronavirus emergency has affected the whole globe in many ways. To assist in the fight against the pandemic, former World number 1 Rafael Nadal has funded a range of health aids for people in need. After a long time since the last time, the 19-time Grand Slam champion has also found time to train on the tennis court.
At the moment both the US Open and Roland Garros remain on the program, but it seems almost impossible that they can be organized regularly with open doors. The USTA decision should arrive by mid-June and at that point we will also know the fate of the 2020 season.
In an interview with La Voz De Galicia, Nadal revealed he had trained for the first time in a while. “I’ve been able to train in a private house because I’m not sure if I can go to the academy. So I preferred to avoid confusion and go train at a friend’s private country house, which has a lead and left it to me" - the Spaniard stated.
Rafa also talked about some restrictions that were in place because of the pandemic and how things are actually getting better. “Luckily it seems that little by little we are containing this disaster. Since yesterday we can go for a walk, something so simple that we always take it for granted but we enjoy it again.”
Nadal has won 85 career titles overall, including the most outdoor titles in the Open Era (83) and a record 59 titles on clay. With 81 consecutive wins on clay, Nadal holds the record for the longest single-surface win streak in the Open Era.
