Roger Federer: Playing in big events without any fans would be very difficult for me
Tennis legend Roger Federer says he hopes tennis will return with the presence of fans in the stadiums when the global tennis circuit resumes later this year or next year.
In an interview published by the Globoesporte website, where the 20 time Grand Slam champion Federer was speaking as part of his efforts in the Winning Together initiative, the Swiss legend says that he would find it very difficult to play the big events without fans.
"In my view, I can't see an empty stadium. I can not. I hope that doesn't happen. Even though most of the time we are training there is no one, everything is quiet, in silence. For us, of course, it is possible to play without any fans. But on the other hand, I really hope that the circuit can return as it normally is. May we wait for the appropriate time to return to normal mode again. At least a third of the stadium or half full. But for me, completely empty when playing in big tournaments is very difficult."
Currently, all tennis tournaments till the end of July have been suspended with the possibility that the tour may resume in early August. The resumption of the tour though depends on how the global situation evolves in different countries and there could be further delays in the resumption of the tour.
Federer will turn 39 years old in August and has already said that he plans to play next year as well.
