Wozniacki: 'If Serena Williams asks, I can just come back...'

Caroline Wozniacki is considered the strongest Danish tennis player in history and one of the strongest of the modern era. She was the number one in the world for 71 weeks, from October 2010 until January 2012 and again in January 2018. She also was the first tennis player from a Scandinavian country to reach the top of the WTA ranking and to win a Slam tournament (Australian Open 2018). In her career 'Caro' has won 30 WTA tournaments, including the year-end Master, won in 2017, and the Australian Open in 2018.

In 2020, Wozniacki reached the semifinals of the ASB Classic beating Paige Hourigan, Lauren Davis and two-time defending champion Julia Görges, before losing to eventual runner-up Jessica Pegula in the semi-finals. She and best friend Serena Williams, playing doubles together for the only time in their careers, lost in the final to Asia Muhammad and Taylor Townsend. Her farewell tournament was the Australian Open. She bowed out in the third round in a loss to Tunisian Ons Jabeur.

The former World number 1 said an offer from pal Serena Williams could tempt her out of retirement as she plans for how to spend her retirement from tennis.

“Maybe, if Serena asks, I can just come back to play doubles with her in a few more tournaments,” Wozniacki told the Tennis Channel. “But I wouldn’t even train,” she joked. “In Auckland, it was one of the most fun tournaments I’ve ever played. We didn’t just discuss tactics on the court, we just talked and I thought, ‘Why didn’t we do this before?'”

“I still don’t know what I’m going to do,” she admitted. “Obviously, I love this sport a lot, it has given me a lot in life, I made a lot of friends. I would love to do some TV work eventually, I would probably do that. I don’t think becoming a coach is for me. I know what to do, but I have a hard time expressing myself to other people. I get impatient, so I don’t think it’s for me.”
