Jarkko Nieminen remains as Finland's Davis Cup captain till 2023

Jarkko Nieminen has signed an extension contract to remain the captain of the Finnish Davis Cup team until 2023. Nieminen started as the Finnish Davis Cup team captain in 2018, when Finland played in the joint European and African Group II. The Finnish Davis Cup national team was scheduled to play India at home in September prior to the tennis shutdown with the winner advancing to the Davis Cup Qualifiers.

The three-year extension deal with the Finland Tennis Association guarantees that the national team players will continue to receive support from Nieminen. Speaking to MTV Sport, Nieminen says, "I'm really motivated and excited to continue the work. However, the trip is just beginning, for myself and the team."

Under Nieminen's captaincy, the Finnish men have won four matches and lost only one. "We are two wins away from the world group. It is completely realistic to get there."

Besides his work as Davis Cup captain, Nieminen has also been helping Finnish juniors and training coaches. "A good junior career is an excellent base, but it still does not guarantee anything. For my part, I try to provide information on what it takes to get to the next level. There are no easy tricks. The beloved hobby became a profession, and now the focus is on helping others. I enjoy seeing the genuine enthusiasm and joy of seeing young people. "

The Davis Cup is the premier international team event in men's tennis and is run by the International Tennis Federation  and Kosmos Holding. It is contested annually between teams from competing countries in a knock-out format and is described by the organisers as the "World Cup of Tennis", and the winners are referred to as the World Champion team.  The most successful countries over the history of the tournament are the United States (winning 32 titles and Australia. The current champions are Spain, who beat Canada to win their sixth title in 2019.

38 year old Jarkko Nieminen peaked at No. 13 in the world rankings in 2006. He has won two ATP singles titles and five doubles titles in his career. He reached the quarter-finals at the 2005 US Open, the 2006 Wimbledon Championships, and the 2008 Australian Open. Nieminen is also the first Finnish player to have won an ATP singles title and to have reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam singles event.
