Novak Djokovic's coach Goran Ivanisevic tests positive for virus

Goran Ivanisevic, Novak Djokovic’s coach, announced via his official Instagram page that he had tested positive for Covid-19. Ivanisevic was a part of the Adria Tour entourage both in Belgrade and Zadar, the latter in his native country Croatia, in the last two weekends along with the world no. 1.

In his message, Ivanisevic said, “Unfortunately, after two negative tests in the last 10 days, I have just found out that I tested positive for Covid-19. I feel good and I don’t have any symptoms. I would like to inform everyone who has been in contact with me that I tested positive and ask them to take extra good care of themselves and their loved ones. I continue to self-isolate as I have been doing already. I wish everyone who got infected a speedy recovery.”

Goran Ivanisevic becomes the fifth-biggest name to test positive for Covid-19

Ivanisevic testing positive for Covid-19 follows that of Djokovic, who announced earlier this week that he, too, had tested positive. Apart from Djokovic, Grigor Dimitrov, Ivanisevic’s countryman Borna Coric, and Djokovic’s compatriot, Viktor Troicki have all tested positive for Covid-19. Apart from these players, a few coaching staff personnel also tested positive for Coronavirus. Aside from the tennis fraternity, two Serbian basketball players who had joined Djokovic for the pre-Adria Tour festivities also tested positive.

Dimitrov, who travelled to both Belgrade and Zadar to play the Adria Tour matches, was the first to announce his positive test, last week leading to the stopping of Zadar leg of the event before its scheduled final on Sunday.

The Bulgarian came under fire from Djokovic’s father with the former alleging that he was responsible for spreading the virus to other players, and for “inflicting damage” to Croatia and to the Djokovic family. “Why did it happen? Because that man probably came sick, who knows from where. He didn’t test here, he tested somewhere else... I think that’s not fair. (He) inflicted damage to both Croatia and to us as a family in Serbia. Nobody is feeling well because of this situation,” Srdjan said, speaking to the RTL news network in Croatia.

Goran Ivanisevic, in his interview with the New York Times, also criticised Dimitrov albeit subtly before pointing out that he had tested negative for the virus. “I was two weeks with Marco Panichi, who is Novak’s fitness coach. I was with him night and day, and he is positive, and I am negative, so how to explain that?” the 2001 Wimbledon titlist had queried.
