Serena Williams installs new surface at home in preparation for the US Open

23 time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams, who is looking to win her record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title, has started her preparations for the US Open by installing the new surface at her home on which this year's US Open will be played.

A few days ago, the USTA had said that the US Open would be held as scheduled from August 31st to September 13th with some restrictions in place and without fans. While several players who are currently in Europe have said they were not certain if they would want to travel to the United States, Serena had confirmed that she will be there at the tournament. 

In a video posted by the USTA, Serena commented, "I really cannot wait to return to New York and play the US Open 2020. I feel like the USTA is going to do a really good job of ensuring that everything is amazing and everyone is safe.

This year, for the first time since 1978, the US Open is switching court manufacturers - moving from DecoTurf to Laykold - and the US Open tournament director Stacey Allaster confirmed that the same surface has been shipped to Serena's house. "I can confirm the surface provided by Laykold for the 2020 US Open and Western & Southern Open was shipped to Serena's house. She's got a new court in her backyard. So she has been training."

Serena Williams had finished runner-up at the US Open for the last two years - to Bianca Andreescu in 2019 and to Naomi Osaka in 2018. Serena Williams has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles, the most by any player in the Open Era, She has been ranked No. in singles on eight separate occasions - she has been No. 1 for 319 weeks, which ranks third in the Open Era among female players behind Steffi Graf and Martina Navratilova.  Serena Williams holds the most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles combined among active players. Her 39 Grand Slam titles put her joint-third on the all-time list and second in the Open Era: 23 in singles, 14 in women's doubles, and two in mixed doubles. Williams has won a record of 13 Grand Slam singles titles on hard court. Williams holds the Open Era record for most titles won at the Australian Open (7) and shares the Open Era record for most titles won at the US Open with Chris Evert (6).
