ATP Moselle Open in Metz cancelled for 2020

The ATP 250 event in Metz, France has been cancelled for 2021, according to the tournament organizers.

The organisers of the ATP Moselle Open have decided to cancel the tournament for this year due to the current pandemic. The tournament was scheduled for the week of September 20 to 27, just before the kickoff of the French Open on clay and clashing with the qualifying dates of the event.

According to Le Republicain Lorrain, the Moselle Open is postponed to 2021. The announcement does not come as a major surprise given that the holding of an indoor hardcourt event the week before a Grand Slam on clay was always going to difficult. A procedure for reimbursement of the tournament tickets will be implemented and communicated on the tournament website.

The press release from the tournament said, "Today, we announce that our tournament is postponed to 2021. The major reason for this cancellation is the positioning of the Roland-Garros tournament on the same dates as the Moselle Open. The rules of deconfinement are evolving day to day, it is difficult to know today the number of spectators authorized to enter the enclosure of the Arena."

Tournament director Julien Boutter commented, "The president of the FFT Bernard Giudicelli had told us directly, explaining to us that it was very, very likely going to be done. He was very clear, and this positioning, not only do I understand it but I defend it perfectly. Tennis has more to lose from not having a Roland-Garros than from not having a Moselle Open."

Metz will also host a tennis event - the 24 hours of solidarity tennis on December 4 and 5. The event aims to raise funds for organizations working during the current pandemic."

Also, there have been some organizational changes. Eric Lucas has been replaced in his role as President while Tournament director Julien Boutter will remain in his role.

The Moselle Open is a professional tennis tournament played on indoor hard courts. It´s part of the ATP World Tour 250 series of the ATP Tour from 2003, Previous winners from France include Arnaud Clément, Jérôme Haehnel, Gaël Monfils, Glles Simon (three times), Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (four times) and Lucas Pouille. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic won the event in 2006. Other past winners of the event include German Peter Gojowczyk, Belgian David Goffin, Russian Dmitry Tursunov, Spain's Tommy Robredeo, Croatian Ivan Ljubicic.
