Lucas Pouille takes initiative to help children at his local club

French tennis star Lucas Pouille has taken an initiative to help the children at his home club in France.

According to a post on the Facebook page of the Loon-Plage club, Pouille will pay the membership fees for members of the club between 3 to 12 years old for the 2020-21 period. Christophe Zoonekynd, captain of the Loon-Plage team and among the early coaches of Pouille, spoke to Le Parisien and says, “I am not surprised by his gesture. He even said that he would help with the purchase of (some) equipment. Lucas is a product of the club and has never forgotten where he came from. He knows what the club and the city have done for him, we always helped him to progress. He already had the talent, we were just a link, but he was always grateful for what we had done."

Pouille has often returned to attend matches and support the numerous requests from the club in recent years. Zoonekynd adds, "When he won the Davis Cup, we organized a small ceremony, I know it touched him. He arrived at 7 years old and stayed until his departure for the Pôle espoir de Poitiers at the age of 12. He has not played for us since 2014, when we were in N 4, but it is possible that he will play a few games with us next season if the international calendar allows him. I know it means a lot to him."

26 year old Lucas Pouille is currently No. 58 in the ATP singles rankings and has a career high ranking of No. 10 which he reached in March 2018. He has won 5 singles titles on the ATP Tour and won the Davis Cup with France in 2017. His best performance at a major was reaching the semi-finals at the Australian Open in 2019, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. He has also reached the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon and US Open Grand Slams in 2016 and the semi-finals of the doubles event at the Australian Open in 2016. He has won over $7 million in career prize money. Pouille has played only one event this year, a second round loss at the Indian Wells Challenger in early March just before the tennis tour shutdown due to the global pandemic. He did enter the UTS series promoted by Patrick Mouratoglou but had to withdraw from the same after one weekend due to an elbow injury.
