Mouratoglou: US Open announcement? Serena Williams knew what she was practicing for

Patrick Mouratoglou, the coach of Serena Williams and the man behind the Ultimate Tennis Showdown, says he believes Serena Williams will win another Grand Slam singles title and that he hopes to invite her when the women are added to his UTS event.

In an interview to the Essentially Sports website, Patrick Mouratoglou, who has worked with Serena Williams for several years now, says, “I believe she will. She’s doing great, she’s been resting a lot the first weeks, she needed rest anyways because her knee needed some rest. Then she started to rebuild her fitness, and the last 3-4 weeks she’s been practicing tennis, she was filming her practices and sending them to me so we could talk about it, and I feel she’s doing well, she’s practicing hard. You know, for all those players who are top competitors, when they know what they practice for and as soon as the announcement of the US Open taking place, Serena knew what she was practicing for. Suddenly the intensity goes to the highest level. So, I’m sure she’ll be ready.”

Mouratoglou also says that when women are going to be added to the event, he will first ask Serena Williams and Coco Gauff to be part of the same, "I mean when it will come up the first two I’m going to ask are Serena and Coco, that’s 100%. Yeah, for sure. It is going to come up, but I don’t know yet exactly when. You know, it’s been extremely challenging to organize something that big in such a short period of time, especially for us because that’s not our normal job, to organize that type of event, that big. If we would’ve also involved women, I mean the organization would have had to be doubled, and we would’ve taken a big risk to make a major mistake. So that’s why we started with only men. But don’t worry, very early we’re going to have women also.”

Patrick Mouratoglou is a French tennis coach and has been the coach of Serena Williams since June 2012. He founded the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy in 1996 in France and has coached many up-and-coming players, including Marcos Baghdatis, Julia Vakulenko, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Aravane Rezaï, Jérémy Chardy, Laura Robson, Yanina Wickmayer and Grigor Dimitrov.
