Torralba:ATP Mallorca is great possibility for Rafael Nadal to practise for Wimbledon

Felix Torralba, the Managing Director of e|motion Group which manages the MercedesCup in Stuttgart and the Erste Bank Open in Vienna as well as the newly created ATP Mallorca Championships, a grass court event which would have made its debut on the 2020 calendar, says Mallorca will be a great opportunity for Rafael Nadal to be able to practice for Wimbledon in the future.

Toni Nadal, the uncle and former coach of Rafael Nadal, is the Tournament Director and Torralba says the new event will present a great possibility for Nadal to be practice for the grass courts and prepare for Wimbledon in the future. 

Speaking to the ATP Tour website, Torralba says, “We have a very strong relationship [with Rafa], through Toni being our Tournament Director… We have the only grass courts in Spain, so obviously for Wimbledon preparation during the grass-court swing — if he is not playing somewhere else in tournaments — that is obviously an important and great possibility for him to practise on great grass courts where he can get ready for Wimbledon. That is always there for him and we have a fantastic relationship. "

Torralba says that Wimbledon has also been very heavily involved in the tournament and they are trying to match the exact surface as that of the grass court major. "Wimbledon is heavily involved in Mallorca. There is consistent communication throughout all the year and also with the development of the grass courts. We have regular visits and regular communication with their court keepers, with our team and with their team. We try to match 100 per cent the surface. They have been testing and they have been checking, so there is definitely a strong communication there. That allows us to deliver the same or similar grass-court conditions to the players, in order to have a perfect preparation.”

The tournament is scheduled the week before the Wimbledon Grand slam and is an ATP 250 event. Torralba says his entire team is now working on the 2021 edition. "The motivation to deliver an even better event in 2021 is definitely there, in the whole team."

Nadal has won 19 Grand Slam singles titles, the second-most in history for a male player, as well as a record 35 ATP Tour Masters 1000 titles, 21 ATP Tour 500 titles and the 2008 Olympic gold medal in singles.He has won a record twelve French Open titles, four US Open titles, two Wimbledon titles and one Australian Open title.
