Ian Poulter still positive about golf
Ian Poulter (44) admitted freely that Collin Morikawa’s (23) win at the US PGA “makes me feel really old”.
Even so, Poulter insisted that there is still some good golf left in him yet as he claimed 40-somethings will still be competing for the Majors. He feels he still have what it takes to play a good game.
But with a new generation of young golfers, including big hits like Matt Wolf and Viktor Hovland that seems to be dominating the scene, golf’s future may lie in the hands of these superstars.
It is in no way time to write off the old-timers.
Tiger Woods (44) won the Masters in 2019 while Paul Casey (43) was runner-upPoulter himself finished tied 22nd, even though tieing fifth for birdies made at the US PGA. “I know I can still compete with the young blood and that is exciting. I don’t want to be irrelevant and that is obviously when your interest level will drop off. When you become less relevant in the game and you can’t compete on the big stage. Just because you are 40-plus doesn’t mean to say you are finished. It probably just means you are not going to be in contention as much as you used to be. But when you are in contention, there is a chance you are going to win. It is a great game. You don’t have to hit 320 – 340 yards. It is not about how far. You just need the whole package. When you have got your game, there is absolutely no reason why you can’t compete with the new generation of kids,” he reportedly said.
In his final round at the Northern Trust, Ian Poulter hit 13 of 14 fairways and 10 of 18 greens in regulation. He had a fantastic day on the green, with no misses on putts within 10 feet. He finished the day tied for 39th at 9-under.
Ian Poulter is refusing to give up on his professional golf career because if you have the whole package, you can still win at any age. Only time will tell whether the old-timers will have to make way for the future superstars - the likes of Morikawa, Wolf and Hovland, of the sport.
