Lloyd Harris fitter and stronger as he heads to New York for the US Open

South Africa tennis player Lloyd Harris is ready to compete in the US Open in New York later this month after an intensive training programme over the past four months in Cape Town and aims to break reach a new career-high ranking when the tour resumes, according to his mother, who spoke to the News24 website

The 23 year old Harris is currently ranked No. 98 in the ATP world rankings and his mother, Cecilia, says that Harris is 'fitter, stronger and more assured' after training under coach Eitan Adams over the past few months of the lockdown in Cape Town during the interview to News24.

His mother, Cecilia, says that her the tough training programme will help him advance to the next level on the ATP circuit and that he wants to surpass his earlier best ranking of No. 72 which he achieved earlier this year.

The big-serving Harris has won 3 ATP Challenger singles titles and 2 Challenger doubles titles as well as 13 ITF singles titles and 4 ITF doubles titles in his career so far. He is currently South Africa's No. 1 ranked player and has also represented South Africa at the Davis Cup where he has a a 11–4 record. He has played the last six Grand Slam events in a row, and his best performance at the majors was a second round appearance at the French Open last year.

He had one of his biggest weeks on the tour in January where he came through qualifying to reach the final of the ATP event in Adelaide where he lost to Russian Andrey Rublev. This was his first appearance in the final of an ATP level event.

Harris will travel to the United States to play in the Western & Southern Open in New York, followed by the US Open Grand Slam event. Some top players have decided to skip the US Open due to concerns about travelling during the current pandemic, including World No. 2 Rafael Nadal, three-time Grand Slam winner Stan Wawrinka and Australia's Nick Kyrgios. However, others such as World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem have confirmed their intention to play in New York.
