Sabine Lisicki posted on social media that she has had a surgery to repair her torn ACL. The German, who was playing the Linz Open this week, had to retire in her first-round doubles match on Monday, 9th November with what seemed to be an injured knee.
In her post, Lisicki said, “Only forward from this moment on! I had a scan the same night and unfortunately had a torn ACL. I already had surgery (and) got all fixed up by the best doctors. It’s going to be a very long (and) tough road back but I’m lucky to be surrounded by the best medical team.”
Then, thanking her fans and well-wishers, Lisicki added, “Thank you to every single message of encouragement that I have received. You guys are simply the best.”
Sabine Lisicki's tryst with injury continuesThe 31-year-old and her British Jodie Burrage were playing the Norwegian-Russian team of Ulrikke Eikeri and Yana Sizikova. At the time of the British-German team calling it off in the match, Eikeri and Sizikova were leading 6-5 in the opening set.
Lisicki, who received a wildcard into the qualifying draw of singles lost in the final qualifying round to the Czech Republic’s Tereza Siniakova 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. The tournament in Linz was the German’s only second tournament in 2020.
Prior to this, Lisicki played the WTA 125k tournament in Prague, the Czech Republic in August. She reached the pre-quarter-finals in the event, losing to Great Britain’s Francesca Jones. It was her first event this year, coming after almost a year, since her last tournament – the WTA 125k tournament in Karlsruhe, Germany.
Lisicki, who reached the 2013 Wimbledon final, has been dealing with several injuries. Once ranked as high as 12th in the world, the German is now ranked 690th in the world after having suffered from multiple injury-related setbacks. Each time she has tried to make a comeback to professional tennis, she has been forced to take a step back on account of yet another injury.
In 2019, after her exit in the third round of qualifying at Wimbledon and in the event in Karlsruhe, Lisicki was forced to miss the rest of the season with injuries up to playing in the Czech Republic. Following her latest surgery and post-op recuperation, Sabine Lisicki’s return date to the tour is still unknown.
