'Roger Federer will not choose one or the other', says former gold medalist
On Sunday, on the occasion of the ceremony that awarded him the award for the best Swiss athlete of the last 70 years, Roger Federer froze the hearts of his countless fans by asking serious doubts about his presence at the Australian Open 2021. The 39-year-old from Basel, who he has not played an official match for almost a year now, struggling to find the best condition after having undergone a double operation on his right knee in recent months. The former world number 1 candidly admitted that his big goals will be concentrated in the summer, with particular reference to the triptych Wimbledon-Tokyo Olympics-US Open. During a long interview with Radio Tele Suisse (RTS), his compatriot Marc Rosset explained how the Swiss legend would have every interest in missing the Australian trip. The former Olympic gold medalist in fact pointed out that it would be risky for King Roger to go to Melbourne, not only because of his precarious physical condition, but also because of the very strict measures imposed by the local government.
Rosset on Roger Federer's return“Frankly, when you see the constraints imposed on the players, the fact that there shouldn't be many spectators, and your conditions aren't yet optimal, you wonder if it is worth taking the risks by going there,” Rosset said. Marc Rosset also believes Roger Federer could be adversely affected by his family’s absence in Melbourne, along with the lack of crowd support. “He should play a very tough tournament, with an uncertain form, without the thrill of those emotions that only the public can give, and all without the family at his side,” Rosset added. “Roger never divides family life and tennis,” Rosset stressed. “It is a whole. He will not choose one or the other. At 39, he may have something else to do than go to Melbourne in such conditions in two months, maybe stay at home and prepare even better.” Recently, Federer dropped a bombshell as he discussed 2021. Apart from his goals for the season being Grand Slam and Olympics, he revealed that he is not ready to play yet. The Swiss Master indicated that he is running against the clock to get to his 100% for the Australian Open 2021. But the delay in the Grand Slam is a boon for Federer. Now with its revised date of February 8th, Federer can hope of reaching his optimum levels to compete at the Aussie Open.
