Alexander Zverev reveals why he split with coach David Ferrer

German tennis star Alexander Zverev has revealed that the biggest reason for his split with coach David Ferrer was the Spaniard's wish to spend more time with his family.

Traveling with Zverev during the pandemic was challenging for Ferrer as he was spending time away from his family and forced to quarantine upon his return home.

"The reason that we ended with David is also because of COVID-19....He just wants to spend time with his family, as well," Zverev explained, per Tennis Majors.

"Right now if he travels to tournaments with me for three, four weeks, if he goes back home, he needs to stay in a two-week quarantine. After a few weeks, he needs to travel with me again. That's just something he couldn't do during this time."

"I don't think it makes sense for me to look for anyone new during COVID-19 either. I think we left everything open with David

"I think with my dad and with my brother more involved now, as well, with Mischa, who was with me during the US Open, I have a great coaching team. I think I can win big tournaments with that coaching staff that I have."

Zverev and Ferrer announced split in early-January

Zverev and Ferrer enjoyed a successful few months as the German made his maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open.

"I had to decide by the end of the year; I spoke to Alexander and told him that I preferred not to continue working with him in 2021. There wasn't a particular reason or anything; I just thought the time wasn't right. Everything is fine between us, and I'm grateful to Alexander for the opportunity he gave me to travel with him in the closing stages of the season," Ferrer said at the time.

"We had a good run during those three months. It wasn't easy for me to continue traveling with Alexander due to the coronavirus and the fact that I'm the Barcelona Open tournament director. There's also my family, which I put above everything.

"I'm not the right person to help Alexander at the moment. In the future, I will work as a coach again, that's for sure."
