Nick Kyrgios opens up about the time spent off the court
Nick Kyrgios has taken the entire coronavirus pandemic situation very seriously, staying away from the court for 11 months and staying at home in Australia without traveling. Nick was one of the rare top-100 players (and the most notable alongside Roger Federer) who didn't return to the court once the season restarted in August, skipping both the US Open and the European swing and enjoying his time back home in Canberra. Nick will play for the first time since February last year at one of the ATP 250 events in Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open, feeling fresh and motivated ahead of the new season. Kyrgios spoke about the previous year and how he handled the coronavirus lockdown. The Aussie was pleased to spend more time with family and friends at home, not missing competition that much and only thinking about staying safe.
"I have enjoyed being back at home in Canberra. It's allowed me to spend with my family and friends and get some perspective on things both on and away from the court. We have had various lockdowns and some restrictions, but I feel like Australia has managed the COVID situation pretty well so far. I've given my body a bit of a break, but now I'm back on the court working hard to get ready for the Australian summer. I think some players benefit from not having big crowds while others feed off the energy. It's definitely made a huge difference being able to train and work out in my hometown.
Nick Kyrgios spoke about the time he spent away from the court. Also, having my family and friends around me definitely keeps me in a great frame of mind. I want everyone to be COVID safe. There are more important things in the world than tennis, and I just don't want the sport to put itself ahead of others' health. I love playing in front of fans, especially in Melbourne for the Australian Open. But I don't want to be reckless. That said, I know a lot of things are at stake. I'm confident Tennis Australia will take the necessary steps to ensure everyone is safe. Whether that be with crowds at the quarter, half, or full capacity. I'm feeling great ahead of the season's start and ready to go," Nick Kyrgios said.
