Victoria Azarenka confident of her level

Former world number one and two editions champion of the Australian Open, Belarusian Victoria Azarenka dropped out of the top 200 in the WTA rankings in 2017. Coming back to the top 50 in the following two years, this season Vika was rightly awarded the Comeback of the Year. Azarenka came back to success at the Western & Southern Open in the bubble of of Flushing Meadows, in New York, reached the final of the US Open and that of Ostrava, finishing the year in 13th position in the WTA world ranking.

Born in 1989, Vika turned 31 last July. She said  to CGTN Sports: "I can't say that it was a big surprise for me to come back to this level of play because I have great confidence in my abilities and I know what I can do if in good physical condition.

It is obvious that the last few years have been difficult, I could not assume that these good results would arrive and I could not expect anything particularly brilliant from me, but I have always been clear that I have maintained the level necessary to be an important tennis player and to achieve great successes."

Vika's last Slam triumph dates back to the Australian Open 2013: the Belarusian, the first seed of the tournament, overtook Monica Niculescu, Eleni Danilidou, Jamie Hampton, Elena Vesnina, Svetlana Kuznecova and Sloane Stephens, before defeating the Chinese Li in the final. Na comeback in the third set.

The former WTA number one also boasts a final in the year-end Masters in 2011: in that edition, staged in Istanbul, Victoria lost in the last match against the Czech Petra Kvitova with a score of 7-5 4-6 6 -3.

Azarenka was awarded a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics, when she was defeated in the semifinals by Serena Williams and won the next match against Russian Maria Kirilenko. The 2021 Australian Open has been moved to February 8 to allow players from all over the world to complete the quarantine.

The greatests tennis stars on the planet, like Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray, Serena Williams, Naomi Osaka, Ashleigh Barty, Simona Halep and all the others, will come back for the upcoming Australian Open 2021, which will be held in Melbourne from 8 February: it will be the most awaited sports event of the first part of the new season. It will be a very spectacualr season, and all of us hope without the problems of the last one, with some presence of the crowd in the courts across the world.

Roger Federer, after he said he will not play the Australian Slam, should come back on the court, for the joy of his fans, at the end of February or at the beginning of March.

The new season has yet to begin but there is already a desire to put a disastrous 2020 behind us from all points of view and start the new year with the first Grand Slam of the year in the hope that the pandemic can slowly regress and bring back the planet to live seriously and also allow the world of sport to perform in front of the general crowd.
