Phillip Island Trophy: Bianca Andreescu gets promising start in Melbourne

Second seed Bianca Andreescu opened her campaign at the Phillip Island Trophy with a win on Monday. The Canadian defeated Madison Brengle in the second round 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-3. In the third round, Andreescu will play Zarina Diyas. Diyas defeated Ana Bogdan 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

Earlier, before the start of the day’s play, third seed Johanna Konta withdrew from the tournament with an injury to her abdomen. The Briton was replaced by lucky loser Gabriella Da Silva Fick in the draw. Da Silva Fick, who consequentially received a first-round bye, defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(6) in her opening-round match. In the third round, the Australian will play 13th seed Marie Bouzkova.

The Czech came through her round-of-32 clash against China’s Lin Zhu 6-4, 6-2.

Spain’s Sara Sorribes Tormo pulled out of the tournament before her second-round match against Japan’s Misaki Doi giving the latter a walkover into the third round. There, Doi will play eighth seed, Danielle Collins.

Collins came through to the third win with a win over fellow American Varvara Lepchenko 6-7(3), 6-1, 6-3.

Phillip Island Trophy: Romanians take it steady

Rebecca Peterson seeded 16th, will be Olivia Gadecki’s third-round opponent. The Swede defeated Greet Minnen 7-5, 6-3 in their round-of-32 match.

Russians Daria Kasatkina and the seventh-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova have set up a round-of-16 clash against each other. Kasatkina defeated another Russian, Varvara Gracheva 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Pavlyuchenkova, meanwhile, came from a set down to beat Ajla Tomljanovic 5-7, 6-4, 6-4.

Fourth seed Petra Martic will play Kimberly Birrell for a place in the quarter-finals. The Croat won her second-round match against Rebecca Marina 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. Birrell ousted India’s Ankita Raina 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.

Jil Teichmann and Patricia-Maria Tig will face each other in the third round. Teichmann won against Tig’s countrywoman Monica Niculescu 6-2, 6-2. Tig, meanwhile, beat Fran Jones 6-1, 6-4.

The last third-round match at the Phillip Island Trophy will be played between fifth seed Qiang Wang and Irina Camelia Begu. Wang defeated Maddison Inglis 6-4, 6-2 in her opener while Begu ousted Anna Blinkova 6-3, 6-2 in their second-round clash.
