Roger Federer: 'It is still my favorite place to take my children'

Roger Federer won his first Major crown at Wimbledon 2003, taking another big step towards the ATP throne. The Swiss could have become world number one in Montreal, Cincinnati and the US Open, missing out on those opportunities and starting over during the indoor fall season. Roger won the Vienna title and entered the Madrid Masters 1000 event a week later, looking for another great participation and more points to his account in the battle for number one at the end of the year with Andy Roddick and Juan Carlos Ferrero. The Swiss defeated Álex Corretja 6-4, 6-3 in 70 minutes in the opener, breaking once in the opener and stealing the opponent's serve three times for a winning start. In the second match, Federer defeated Mardy Fish 6-3, 7-6 in one hour and 32 minutes to reach the quarterfinals. With a serve of just 50%, Roger hit four aces and five double faults, dodging two out of three break opportunities to keep the pressure on Mardy. The American couldn't match those numbers, struggling with the second serve and breaking twice to propel the Swiss to the finish line. Federer had to work hard in a 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over Feliciano López in two hours and 16 minutes in the quarterfinals. The Swiss won four more points than the Spanish, suffered a break in the opener and delivered the only successful return game of his in the deciding match to prevail and stay on the course of the title. Lopez had a chance to beat Federer in straight sets. He saved 11 of 12 break opportunities, came up short in the second set tiebreaker and pushed Federer to the top after that single break the Swiss won in the final set.

Recently, Roger Federer provided fans and people worldwide an idea to plan an ideal trip to Switzerland. He indicated that people should first land in either Geneva or Zurich. The best possible time to visit the scenic country is during the summers. During that time of the year, individuals can roam around freely as it is not highly cold. Roger Federer stated, “Fly into Zurich or Geneva and go from there. In the summer, I think you would want to visit Lucerne and Interlaken and maybe visit Jungfrau, Basel, Zurich, Bern, the capital — its inner city is also really beautiful. We also have some incredible museums in Switzerland. The Foundation Beyeler art museum is great. I grew up visiting the Tinguely Museum, which is very interesting.” The 39-year-old further added, “In Lucerne, there is the Swiss Museum of Transport, which is still my favorite place to take my children. It’s a wonderful place where you can see old trams, trains, planes, cars, bikes, you name it. Of course, we also have a huge festival culture in Switzerland. There’s Fasnacht, a Lenten carnival in Basel, in March, and we have all these jazz and film festivals.”
