Stefanos Tsitsipas: I haven't played super excellent or outstanding so far at RG
Greek tennis star Stefanos Tsitsipas admitted that he really likes playing in Paris as he is hoping to make a deep run at the French Open.
Tsitsipas, who is enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 5 in the world, handed a 6-3 6-4 6-3 loss to world No. 103 Pedro Martinez to reach the third round at Roland Garros.
“I really like playing in Paris,” Tsitsipas said on court, as quoted on the ATP website. “I feel like the fans have embraced me and made me one of them. So, I’m really glad my tennis is there, my performance is there, and I’m able to deliver not just good tennis but also create a good atmosphere on this court.”
Tsitsipas wasn't at his best but still wonMartinez saved two break points in the fourth game, before earning the first break of the match in the following game.
Unfortunately for Martinez, he failed to hold on to his serve after earning a break as Tsitsipas claimed back-to-back to overturn the deficit and win the opener.
After losing the opener, Martinez made a positive start to the second set as he took an early 2-0 lead.
But the Spaniard once again failed to hold on to his serve after claiming a break as Tsitsipas earned breaks in third and ninth games to take a two-set lead.
Tsitsipas dropped his serve two times in the third set but collected three breaks to win the set and book a straight-set win.
Tsitsipas has had a big clay season so far as he won it all at the Monte Carlo Masters and Lyon, while he ended runner-up at the Barcelona Open.
“I’ve had good weeks this year, I’ve had some good results, but, of course, I feel like there’s always better,” Tsitsipas said. “I don’t see my performance so far as super excellent and outstanding, but I’ve been consistent and that’s very important to maintain that [Race] lead that I’m looking for.”
