Felix Auger-Aliassime: I need to look myself in the mirror
Rising Canadian star Felix Auger-Aliassime wants to look himself in the mirror and try to figure out what he needs to improve going forward.
Auger-Aliassime, ranked at No. 17 in the world, made the quarterfinal at this week's Cincinnati Masters.
Auger-Aliassime didn't play particulary well against Stefanos Tsitsipas but he pushed the Greek into a three-setter during the Cincinnati quarterfinal.
Tsitsipas, seeded at No 2, handed Auger-Aliassime a 6-2 5-7 6-1 loss.
"I need to look myself in the mirror & see what I can improve. These type of matches make me want to be better ... I’ll do what I have to do to get there," Auger-Aliassime said following his defeat to Tsitsipas, per Mark Masters.
Auger-Aliassime has been struggling a bit with his form recentlyAfter making his maiden Grand Slam quarterfinal at Wimbledon, Auger-Aliassime was hoping to have a big summer hard-court campaign.
Unfortunately for Auger-Aliassime, that hasn't been the case so far as he made the round-of-16 in Washington and suffered a second round loss at the Toronto Masters.
Auger-Aliassime also made his Olympic debut in Tokyo but didn't impress, having suffered a first round exit at the event.
Making the quarterfinal in Cincinnati was a positive result for Auger-Aliassime but he wasn't happy at all with the way played in the third set against Tsitsipas.
After the match, Auger-Aliassime blasted himself for playing "poorly" in the third set.
Auger-Aliassime saved two match points in the second set but stood no chance in the third set.
“Tennis is a psychological game and things like this happen. It’s important to just stick to your roots and what you are doing best,” Tsitsipas said in his on-court interview. “It might not have been ideal in the second set, especially when I made so many opportunities and had such a good opportunity to close it a bit earlier. But with a lot of patience and just trying to find that opportunity in the third set, I was stepping in, I was really determined and I didn’t let go.”
