Winners Open: Second seed Andrea Petkovic moves on; top seed Alize Cornet exits

Second seed Andrea Petkovic advanced to the second round of the Winners Open in Romania on Tuesday. The German was leading 6-3, 4-1 when her opponent, Romanian qualifier Alexandra Dulgheru was forced to retire from the match.

In the second round, Petkovic will play Dulgheru’s compatriot, Jaqueline Cristian. Cristian defeated Hungary’s Reka-Luka Jani 6-1, 6-2 in 62 minutes.

Meanwhile, Alize Cornet, the top seed in Cluj-Napoca this week, was upset in the opening round. Egypt’s Mayar Sherif ousted the Frenchwoman 6-2, 6-4 in the first round in an hour and 25 minutes. In the round-of-16, Sherif will take on wildcard Alexandra Eala.

The 16-year-old from the Philippines, who’s playing her first tournament on the WTA Tour won her first WTA match against Argentinian qualifier Paula Ormaechea. Eala won 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 35 minutes.

Winners Open: Romanians have a field day

Third seed Ana Bogdan, Irina Bara and Mihaela Buzarnescu were the home players who moved into the second round.

Bogdan defeated Hungary’s Panna Udvardy 6-2, 6-4 in 70 minutes in their opener. Bara came through Anna-Lena Friedsam 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 30 minutes in their first-round clash. Lastly, Buzarnescu upset seventh seed Viktoriya Tomova 6-2, 6-3 in an hour and 19 minutes in their opening-round clash.

For a place in the quarter-finals, Bogdan will now play Alexandra Krunic of Serbia. Bara will take on eighth seed Kristina Kucova. Kucova reached the second round with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Turkey’s Cagla Buyukakcay. Buzarnescu will play Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena. Arruabarrena won her opening-round match against Romanian wildcard Evelyne Tiron 6-0, 6-0 on Monday.

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova won the Slovakian derby against Viktoria Kuzmova. Schmiedlova needed an hour and 14 minutes to complete a 6-4, 6-2 win. In the second round, she’ll now play sixth seed Kaja Juvan. The Slovenian defeated Russia’s Marina Melnikova 6-1, 6-1 in their opener on Monday.

Australian qualifier Seone Mendez reached the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Croatian qualifier Jana Fett. Mendez’s next opponent is Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko. Tsurenko upset fifth seed Elena-Gabriela Ruse 6-3, 6-3 in their opener on Monday.

Kristyna Pliskova and Katarzyna Kawa will take on each other for a place in the quarter-finals of the Winners Open. Pliskova upset the fourth-seeded Italian Martina Trevisan 6-4, 6-4 in their opener on Tuesday. Kawa defeated wildcard Briana Szabo 6-2, 6-1 in their first-round encounter.
