Alexander Zverev: 'Roger Federer is my idol, the first time we played..'

After a well-deserved rest following the perfect ending of 2018, world no. 4 Alexander Zverev has hit the practice court and the gym again, preparing for 2019 and even bigger goals on the Grand Slam stage. Alexander will kick off the new season in Perth, competing with Angelique Kerber for Germany at the very last Hopman Cup before heading to Melbourne where he will seek his first Grand Slam crown. Alexander has been one of the best players in the world in the last couple of seasons, winning nine ATP titles in 2017 and 2018, including three Masters 1000 tournaments and the ATP Finals, beating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic in back-to-back matches to become the youngest champion of the elite ATP event since Djokovic 10 years ago.

In his interview to ARD, Alex has spoken about various interesting topics, emotions on the court, the support he receives from his family and the goals for 2019. Asked about his biggest win, Zverev named the most recent success in London as the greatest moment of his career while he still remembers that unfortunate loss against Rafael Nadal at Indian Wells in 2016 when he had a match point against one of the greatest players of all time before a 6-7 6-0 7-5 defeat. Halle and Rome are his favorite tournaments in the calendar and he again underlined Roger Federer as his idol, still remembering the headband he received from the great Swiss when he was still a kid.

Roger and Sascha played for the first time in Rome back in 2016 and the most important thing for the youngster was not to look ridiculous in front of Federer, which certainly didn't happen despite losing the match in straight sets. Also, Zverev would love to have his brother's volley and he is hoping for a special year in 2019, setting the ultimate goals of winning as many Grand Slams as possible in his career.
