Amelie Mauresmo resigns as Davis Cup captain to coach Lucas Pouille

Amélie Mauresmo resigned as the French team Davis Cup captain in order to coach Lucas Pouille. Mauresmo was supposed to succeed to Yannick Noah and covering the new important role for the next two years, but she has prioritized Pouille. Through a statement, the FFT said: '(Amelie Mauresmo) has accepted this challenge and renounces the position of captain of the Davis Cup France team to carry out this mission. The French Tennis Federation supports and encourages this project which serves the interests of French tennis.”

Pierre Cherret, the FFT’s National Technical Director, understands Pouille's choice: 'It was important and logical for Lucas, after his fruitful collaboration with Emmanuel Planque, to look for the person most likely to continue his development', Cherret said. 'As head of the French teams, I will soon make my proposal for the new captain to the committee.”

Through Twitter, Pouille wrote: 'I am very happy to start my new collaboration with @AmeMauresmo! Her experience as a player and coach can help me achieve my goals. I’m sure we’re going to do great things together.'

Meanwhile, the Marseille Open Tournament Director Jean-François Caujolle commented on the new Davis Cup format: 'I was in favor of organizing it every two years, but it also meant less income for the International Federation. From my point of view, it is the Italian Francesco Ricci Bitti, his former president, who is the gravedigger of the Davis Cup. For almost 20 years, he refused dialogue with the players. However, do not be fooled, the group Kosmos, managed by Gerard Piqué, also came to see the ATP, but the tournaments told him no. ATP preferred that we manage our assets rather than give them to a third party. In fact, we had someone rich come in, but we did not control him.'
