Annabel Croft: I have learned to never underestimate Roger Federer

Roger Federer will be competitive next year, assured the TV presenter Annabel Croft exclusively speaking to Tennis World USA. 'I have learned to never underestimate Roger Federer,' said Croft. 'Because four years ago some people were writing him off, they were like "We have seen the best of him, his best years are finished" and then he cameback winning two Grand Slams last year. I learned over the years when you have somebody with such a strong mentality, you can never underestimate them. But there is no question he did have a difficult second half to the year, his confidence was not quite the same as it was at the start of the year. He also had some difficult losses like against Juan Martin del Potro in Indian Wells, against (John) Millman at the US Open, Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon. But I am pretty sure he has been practicing very hard in the off-season and preparing for a very very good season in 2019.'

Asked if Federer should play on clay in 2019, Croft replied: 'I am not going to advice him, but he may think to change his preparation compared to the previous years, so it would not surprise me if we see him on the clay. But he has been so clever and so careful with his scheduling that it has paid off so often in the past, so it's difficult to criticize him. This year perhaps because of some early losses and having not played on clay he ended up not playing so much tennis. But it maybe a risk worth taking, to may be not play on clay, considering that he wants to win another Grand Slam at Wimbledon.'
