Camila Giorgi Pulls Out of WTA Brisbane International
Tennis - Italy's Camila Giorgi has pulled out of the WTA Brisbane International and is expected to start her season at the WTA event in Sydney instead. The top-ranked Italian, ranked No. 26 in the world, is coming off a good season in 2018, where she won her second career title in Linz, Austria in her final tournament of the season. She also reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon and the semi-finals of three tournaments, including Sydney, Prague and Tokyo.
Giorgi will then head to the Australian Open in Melbourne where her best appearance is a third-round appearance in 2015. Giorgi will be defending 210 ranking points in Sydney, where she came through the qualifying draw last year to reach the semi-finals after wins over Sloane Stephens, Petra Kvitova and Agnieszka Radwanska before finally going down to Angelique Kerber.
Giorgi is known for her big powerful groundstrokes on the court but the 26-year-old has often had problems with her consistency on the court. The Brisbane event has attracted a strong field and includes 7 of the world's top 10 players. Ukraine's Elina Svitolina, ranked No. 4, US Open champion Naomi Osaka, ranked No. 5, US Open champion Sloane Stephens, ranked No. 6, Petra Kvitova, ranked No. 7, Karolina Pliskova, ranked No. 8, Kiki Bertens, ranked No. 9 and Daria Kasatkina, ranked No. 10, are in the field this year. The event runs from December 30 to January 6 and will also have an ATP event, where the likes of Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Kei Nishikori, will compete.
