Darren Cahill says he declined to coach Roger Federer
For some, rejecting the chance to coach Roger Federer may be unthinkable. But a few have done so in the past. In September, exclusively speaking to Tennis World USA, the former world no. 13 Paolo Bertolucci said he thanked Federer for considering him for the position of his coach, but he did not accept. Now, Darren Cahill, who worked with legends like Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi, Andy Murray, Ana Ivanovic, Fernando Verdasco, Daniela Hantuchova and Sorana Cirstea, revealed he was about to become Federer's new coach during the Indian Wells tournament in March 2009, as reported by EVZ.
They trained together for nine days in Dubai, but Darren changed his mind. He thought that if he coached Federer full-time he would not have time for his family. His wife Victoria and their two kids, Tahlia and Benjamin, who were four and seven years old at the time, were living in Las Vegas. 'Darren is an amazing man, he has a fantastic personality, and it would have been a true gift for Roger. But he did not want to travel so much, he has a young family and he wants to stay close to them,' said Tony Godsick, Federer's longtime agent.
Cahill recently took a break from coaching responsibilities to be with his family. He was coaching Simona Halep, whom he helped to win her first Major at the 2018 French Open. Halep had lost three previous Major finals, including a tough loss at the 2018 Australian Open final to Caroline Wozniacki.
