Expert explains why Roger Federer is better than Ronaldo, Messi
The Italian Eurosport TV commentator Gianni Ocleppo, a former tennis player, commented on how tennis will look like after Roger Federer's retirement. Speaking to La Stampa, Ocleppo said: 'Once he stops, not only tennis but also the world sports will have lost an elegant character who embraces the true sports spirit. I think that Federer's figure is more universal than other champions', like Ronaldo or Messi, for the popularity he enjoys in certain places of the world like India, China and Japan, where tennis is even more popular than football.'
Ocleppo also recalled this year's Australian Open final win by Federer over Marin Cilic. 'I had already commented last year's Australian Open final between Nadal and Federer, won by Roger in fine sets, and that was already an amazing achievement. But this year's final between Cilic and Federer was even more popular, also because for Federer it was the 20th Grand Slam title and he beat a younger opponent who played a big match. When I saw Roger crying, I did not manage to speak anymore for several minutes, I got emotional.'
